Our Story & Vision
Founded by two physicians in 1999, Shearwater Capital is an investment advisory firm dedicated to helping doctors and their families achieve long-term financial security. Our founders, former radiology faculty and business school classmates at Washington University, started Shearwater with a clear vision: to bring the best ideas from academic finance into the real world of personal investing in a practical, cost-effective manner.
What began as a small firm serving family and friends steadily grew as strong results and trusted relationships drew more physicians to our firm. More than two decades later, Shearwater Capital has grown into a nationally recognized advisory practice serving medical professionals and their families across the United States, while remaining steadfast in our commitment to evidence-based investing delivered at a reasonable cost.

Jeffrey J. Brown
Principal

Jeff co-founded Shearwater Capital in 1999. As Principal and Chief Investment Officer, he oversees the firm’s investment strategy and client support. In addition to his work at Shearwater Capital, Jeff serves as Professor of Radiology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, having previously served as Chair of Radiology at Saint Louis University, and Professor of Radiology at Washington University. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Irvine, his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and his MBA from Washington University, where he was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. His professional excellence has been recognized in St. Louis Magazine, where he was named one of St. Louis’ Top Doctors each year from 2011 through 2020.

Eric S. Malden
Principal
MD MBA
Eric co-founded Shearwater Capital in 1999. As Principal and Chief Technology Officer, he oversees administration and operations for the company, while providing key leadership in the areas of compliance and information technology. In addition to his role at Shearwater, Eric is a practicing radiologist in private practice. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and his MBA from Washington University, where he was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. Earlier in his career, Eric served as an Assistant Professor of Radiology and General Surgery at Washington University. In recognition of his clinical excellence, Eric has been named one of Denver's Top Doctors in 5280 Magazine 15 times since 2005.
Jared A. Meese
Chief Compliance Officer
MBA
Jared is the Chief Compliance Officer for Shearwater Capital. Jared has an MBA with an emphasis in Finance, from Webster University. He received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University. Jared previously was an Investment Representative with Edward Jones, and has served in various compliance related positions in government and private industry.
